Are you new to teaching chemistry? Possibly you have worked as a chemist and have decided to switch careers, desiring to pass on to others your love of the subject. Maybe you need ways of describing concepts that you yourself understand very well. There can often be a difference between knowing something and teaching it! Even if you are an established teacher of chemistry I hope that this work can be of benefit. It is always advantageous to have an extra description or analogy handy for those instances when you are faced with a few confused faces after presenting in a manner that usually gets the point across to most students. While in college I found it advantageous to dissect complicated material into more easily manageable components. I needed mental images and developed analogies in order to understand. Plenty of those tools which I used to learn chemistry found their way into my lectures when it was time to teach. Many students enjoyed, and found advantageous, lecture descriptions that differed from that which they read in their textbooks. I tweaked these devices over 20 years as I became more aware of student preparation and misconceptions. I make no references regarding pedagogical research or "best practice". I offer simply a good review of content, accompanied by comments regarding presentation, mental imagery, analogies, common student errors and misconceptions. In other words I attempt to make you aware of "things that worked for me". While writing this book I could not comprehend a way to discuss methods without first describing content. I have endeavored to describe these concepts in the same way I do in the classroom. This is not meant to insult your intelligence. For those who need it, this may serve as a decent basis of review. It is hoped that you will use some of my descriptions to complement what already works for you in your classroom.

Years ago, when I was teaching math (Algebra, Calculus, and Analytic Geometry), I was really just feeling my way. I tried to remember as much as I could from the teaching styles of my own better instructors. It helped to model my explanations and techniques on the best role models. But, like I say, I was just feeling my way. Certainly I loved being in front of a classroom, and enjoyed helping students, but I always felt I was letting them down in some important ways. I felt lazy, unprepared, and inept because no matter how hard I tried, my explanations, my understanding, and my success with students always seemed to fall short.

What I needed was help from a master teacher like Thom Williams, a book that explained how to teach my subject matter. If such a book had been available for math at the time, I think I could have made more of my teaching career. Williams makes a point in the introduction that hit home. Most science and math teachers are really double majors in college, taking education classes along with subject matter classes in their field. But the education classes largely leave it to the student to figure out how to integrate content with the pedagogic methods. It takes years to do this, and it’s unfair to the students in those first few years to have a teacher feeling his way through the material. This book is designed to bridge that gap and shorten the process for newer teachers of chemistry.

The writing style is fluid, informal and clear. A new chemistry teacher would get a jump start by spending a few hours a week with this book. The author was an absolutely stellar teacher for many years, and you’d be learning from a master.

This book would have come in so handy when I had to teach chemistry for the first time. It is well organized and isn't just a list of what to teach. Instead it gives lots of ideas on how to teach to students, what interests students and ways to engage them. I will definitely be using this book when I teach chemistry. It will help me to develop working lesson plans and engaging lessons.
I remember my first year of teaching chemistry. I had been teaching middle school science for nine years and had "moved up," to teaching eleventh grade chemistry. If I had this book as a resource back then I would have been thrilled! It is well written, concise and academically sound. Looking back now after thirty-one years of teaching, ten of which included high school chemistry, this book would have saved me so much stress and anxiety. You could use this book as a sound curriculum outline. I don't run across much in the "teaching" category of literature that peaks my interest. This book was a refreshing read. I would recommend that every beginning high school teacher read this book.

This book has made teaching HS chem a walk in the park. He breaks down difficult subject matter into small, teachable steps. This is truly a "how to teach" book for people who already understand chemistry, but need some help conveying complex ideas to not so complex intellects! I have used every idea in this book, and literally, every one has been a breakthrough for the students. Education needs more books like this. Highly recommend.
