I bought this book almost on a whim, after hearing the author speak via an online class. Within a month, I read it three times. The book became so crowded with markings, notes, and stickies, that I had to clear the table and order another copy.After 10 years of pastoral ministry, followed by 10 years in business consulting, I am done with gurus and 3-step programs to anything. Instead, I follow wise, grounded, life-loving sojourners, people who can help me grow deeper and better as a person and a professional. David B. Drake became just such a guide. Never met the man in person, but I am going to!
This is a book about coaching only because to be an engaged human being is to coach and be coached. It is a practical book about natural human change that leaders, teachers, executives, and politicians can turn to understand themselves and the people they serve.

This is both scholarly and wonderfully insightful. I was pleased to find myself immersed in its words. Because storytelling and narrative are so much a part of my world, and because I am also a coach, this book showed me that narrative is actually the key to helping others find their purpose and their direction. It's a must for any coach's library.
I highly recommend this book for several reasons. To start, David's coaching methodology is useful and well crafted. The book itself is well written. While he doesn't present a rigid system or practice, rather he presents a broad approach based in practice and in a literature that goes way beyond the coaching field. The text is extremely well researched. For any of you who enjoy reading a book with their finger turning to the references, this text is a delight. Presenting the value of a narrative approach as well as a clear method for integrating the practice, David brings the reader along with a well articulate theory of change vital to a powerful coaching methodology. I refer back to this book regularly in my teaching, writing as well as when I want to better understand what is happening in my coaching. This is simply an excellent book. I'm looking forward to the next one as well!
When buying a book, I always think if I can discover one idea and apply it professionally or personally the book is worth the purchase. As I read David Drake's book, I found myself unraveling an old story that has been hanging around in my personal life. I didn't intentionally plan to put his methodology to work right away. It just happened and I found I was suddenly using his process to look at story I have lived for a very long time through a different lens. I changed my story and found I could indeed breathe life into a new story.
This book is certain to transform the way we approach coaching. Central to his process is the power of being with the client which releases the idea that when coaching you have to do something, say something or fix something. Instead, he talks about the importance of silence and deep listening to the client's story giving space and time for a new story to emerge. Whether you are just starting out your coaching practice or you have been a life coach for many years like I have this is must read. Ruth M.
